Tossa de Mar

Tossa de Mar Castle

Climbing up to the castle walls from the Plaza de Armas, to enjoy fantastic views of the town and the Mediterranean, is one of the best things to do in Tossa de Mar.

This castle, of which only the imposing walls and several towers remain, was built in the 12th century to protect the town and its fishermen from pirate attacks by sea and its location on the top of a hill, at the southern end of Playa Grande, has made it the symbol of the town and its most photogenic site.

To get to the castle, we recommend going up through the centre of the town, passing through the Roqueta neighbourhood and down the Passeig de la Vila Vella, with several viewpoints overlooking the Playa Grande, which we assure you will leave you speechless. This way, you will have both perspectives and you will be able to enjoy unique views.

Vila Vella

This is the name given to the historic centre of Tossa. It is surrounded by the old town walls.

You will love its cobbled streets full of flowers. Here you will also find the old church of Sant Vicenç. Here you can also buy some souvenirs in one of the craft shops. There are also restaurants where you can eat very well. It is one of the most beautiful places to see in Tossa de Mar.

Municipal Museum

It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Tossa de Mar. The museum is protected by the wall. Here you can find works by different European artists, as well as archaeological remains from the Villa dels Ametllers and the famous Mosaic of Vitalis.

Lighthouse of Tossa de Mar

Another of our favourite places to see in Tossa de Mar, which is located at the top of the city walls, is its striking lighthouse. Standing 10 metres high, this lighthouse, built on top of a square building on the site of the old castle of Tossa, serves as a luminous signpost along the coast and also explains in an educational way how these typical Mediterranean installations work.

In front of the lighthouse there is a spectacular terrace located on a cliff from where you can enjoy the sea views while you have a drink or a tapa. Going down from the lighthouse, along a path that goes in the direction of Cala es Codolar, parallel to the coast, you will find a small viewpoint with a stone table, ideal for a private picnic with breathtaking views.
